THE DIVISION SYSTEM IN CRISIS: Essays on Contemporary Korea by Paik Nak-chung, editor of The Quarterly Changbi and Professor Emeritus of English at Seoul National University, was published by Global, Area, and International Archive, University of California Press in October, 2011.
This book is based on the original Korean edition published in 1998. The Korean edition was widely acclaimed to have paved the way for understanding the Korean Peninsula issues and inter-Korean relations from the perspective of “the division system.” lt was also translated into Japanese in 2001.
Part I and Ⅱ of this English edition include the complete translation of the Korean edition except its third chapter, and Part III consists of three recent articles. The book contains Bruce Cumins’ foreword and the author’s preface to the English edition. The chronology of inter-Korean relations and the texts of major declarations and statements mentioned in the book are also added for the convenience of English readers.
The book was translated by Kim Myung-hwan, Sol June-Kyu, Song Seung-cheol, and Ryu Young-joo, with the collaboration of the author.
