‘The Prix de l’Inaperçu’, which commemorates its 7th anniversary in 2014, was established by literary critics and literature journalists in France to honor exceptional literary works unjustly overlooked by major literature award even with the great excellence in work. It was awarded to the one of French literary works and the one of foreign literary works respectively every year.
The short story collection, titled ‘I’m going to the convenience store’, is a sequel of the author’s another short story collection, ‘Run, papa, run’, translated into French in 2012(French title is ‘Cours papa, cours!’). This book contains four short stories, which do not belong to her previous work.
Mr. Nils C. Ahl, a literary critic and literary reporter of Le Monde, said, “All the four short stories in this collection are all divided but tranquil, and depressive but also delicate at the same time, therefore, it is never easy to choose only one selection. The talent of this young writer born in 1980 is well melted in this work through self-control. Even if the background of this novel is Korea, this work does not make readers feel isolated by foreign culture while maintaining its own unique oriental culture by using a technique to excellently combine the oriental literature with western literature.” Furthermore, he also mentioned about the title story of ‘I’m going to the convenience store’ by saying, “The female main character tries to get rid of her own depression by frequently visiting a convenience store. However, her sorrow keeps growing and growing at the very kingdom of commercial product consumption and capital exchange. People’s acts of consumption to buy a blade to cut their own artery or to buy a bottle of water to take sleeping pills raise the confusion by being combined with the daily tragedy. However, we will eventually be able to look for the hope through the genuinely humane impression, not just through a symbolical place called the convenience store.”
It is such a great pleasure and an honor for Chang-bi Publishers to announce the winning of the 7th Prix de l’Inaperçu with Korean literary work, and Chang-bi Publishers will try even much harder to contribute to the development of Korean Literature.
