Born in 1951 in Kumamoto, Kyushu, Japan, Yamamuro Shinichi studied the history of political ideas and currently is a professor in the Institute for Research in Humanities at Kyoto University. As an effort to examine East Asian history and to realize a vision of an intellectual network in East Asia, he recently became a member of the editorial board of the academic journal A New Century in Asia(Japanese). His major works include An Age of Legal Bureaucracy: National Planning and the Course of Knowledge(Japanese; 1984), Knowledge and Politics in Modern Japan(Japanese; 1985), Chimera: A Portrait of Manchukuo(Japanese; 1993), The Representation of Mutual Recognition and Misunderstanding among Japan, China, and Korea(Japanese; 1998), Asia as an Ideological Task(Japanese; 2001), and From the Borders of Eurasia: Into Contemporary Asia(Japanese; 2003).
