Chung Byung-ho received his PhD at the University of Illinois through field research of Japanese culture. Currently he jointly holds positions as professor of cultural anthropology at Hanyang University and chairman of the Korean Cultural Anthropological Society. As a part of his humanitarian relief work, he has visited North Korea several times and studied the impacts of famine in North Korea at the border between China and North Korea. He has also founded a school for North Korean refugee children and a center for multicultural child immigrants. He is a long-time leader of the movement for cooperative childcare and community education, and has published several works based on his joint research regarding the synthesis of North and South Korean culture. These include the books Welcome to Korea: Life in South Korea for North Koreans and Korea’s Multicultural Spaces. He also co-authored the book North Korea: Beyond Charismatic Politics.
