This book interestingly recounts in a story format the process through which adolescents explore their own minds by personally trying diverse psychological tests and come to understand psychology. It has been constructed to win teenage readers’ empathy by starring An-na, the protagonist who represents the heart-heavy young adults of today, her friends noteworthy for their individuality, and teacher and psychologist Mr. Choe I-go. In addition, the volume addresses a broad range of topics so that, instead of merely remaining on the level of self-consolation or self-help, the knowledge and insights gained from such psychological tests prompt readers to consider social problems as well.
* Storyline
Having just turned fifteen, An-na is an ordinary teenager in search of her true dreams. By chance, she chooses the Psychological Test Group for her extracurricular activities. She is joined by others: Yong, who wants to be a popular entertainer; Ju-yeong, who dreams of becoming a psychologist; Jong-chan, who is unfathomable yet earnest and shrewd; and Seon-a, who is an all-A student. Under the guidance of Mr. Choe I-go, a teacher who majored in psychology, the Saturday Psychology Club is thus born. Under Mr. Choe’s guidance, members of the club try their hands at historic psychological tests that have been eye-opening to many. Through examples easily seen in everyday life, they learn about psychological theories regarding questions such as why people cram for exams, why people want to buy products advertised by popular entertainers, and why it is difficult to say no when everyone else says yes. In the process, An-na discovers a new side to her friend Yong, whom she has considered a reckless prankster, and harbors friendly feelings toward upperclassman Jong-chan, who exudes secretive attractiveness. She thereby explores her mind psychologically and comes to see social problems surrounding her from a new perspective.
