This volume is a collection of critical essays about Ko Un’s 35 years of literary life. Part one consists of overview essays by Lee Dong-soon and Choi Won-sik, and an interview with the poet entitled “A Conversation with Ko Un the Poet.” In the interview he recounts his extraordinary career ranging from a high school teacher and journalist to a monk and poet. In the five essays of part 2, representative Korean literary critics focus in detail on each of the five phases of the poet’s literary world, from his early verses to those of the early 90s. Part 3 deals with the poet’s literary world and his thoughts on literature. In part 4, leading critics and new critics closely discuss Ko Un’s novel, essays and critical essays.
