Her Perfect Day

To South Korean women, this world is often like ill-fitting shoes. Difficult livelihood, injustice and discrimination, unfair married lives, and unwanted pregnancies… Nor are these all. Like wounds that are formed on the ankles with each step, there are simply too many things that frustrate and shackle women’s dreams.

Her Perfect Day consists of nine short comics about and for women who maintain a precarious balance in such squalid lives. Each comic in turn is based on verse by illustrious poets including Gi Hyeongdo, Bak Jeongman, Heo Yeon, O Gyuwon, Choi Young-mi, Choe Seungja, Hwang Jiwoo, and Shin Hyeon-lim. While poems have at times been quoted in comic books and cartoons, the present volume is novel for representing and recreating poetry, as an inspiration, in the comic genre and, as such, is a meaningful attempt. In this book, Chae Min thus reads poems, interprets them in her way, and, based on them, creates new poems in drawing.
