The father I loathed died a lonely death!
I’ve travelled this long, dark tunnel for so long; can I every be happy again?
How long does it take to accept the death of one’s father? Worse, what if one finds out that their father, who was one cause of family disfunction and who never contacted the family, died by himself, all alone? Through the topic of dying alone, this comic book is about the life, depression, and growth of a woman in her thirties.
Mood-less Mood is a story about a woman named Hye-jin, who as a daughter and a mother of a child comes face-to-face with deeply buried emotions as she falls into an uncontrollable depression following the news that her father died by himself, all alone. And because of this depression, Hye-jin suddenly falls into a state of mood that is neither good nor bad, into a ‘mood-less mood’. Hye-jin’s life becomes painful from chronic depression, and this life of hers appeals to the reader for sincere sympathy. Even though the story focuses on a single woman’s narrative, Jeong-in Ku shows us her ability to reflect broadly on the social prejudices concerning suicide and the problem of the elderly dying alone, a widespread issue in modern Korean society. As a result, Ku has burst onto the scene with this first print publication of hers which was selected for the 2019 Endowment for the Production of Diverse Comic Books.
