Jiyoo Lee writes touching and captivating stories using her love for, and extensive knowledge of, science. African Stories We Heard from the Shooting Star Lady, a journal of African animals, is the latest work of Jiyoo Lee, a scientist who loves nature documentaries and believes that the lives of animals and people are more alike than they are different. Africa, the world’s second largest continent, is comprised of diverse environments such as deserts, savannahs, temperate forests, tropical rain forests, high alpine regions, and swamps, and is home to countless species of animals. But because of humans and their greed, many animals are on the brink of extinction. Last winter, realizing that the animals she used to read about and see in documentaries were slowly disappearing from the planet, Jiyoo Lee travelled to Africa to meet those animals in person.
“The first step in protecting the multitude of species that live on our planet is to learn about them. And in order to learn about animals, we need to be interested and observe them for a long time. After returning from Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, I wanted to share with everyone what I learned about the animals I met there.”
